John Wayne heads an all-star cast in the disaster movie “The High and the Mighty.” The story of a DC4 airliner that runs into trouble flying from Honolulu to San Fransisco was expertly directed by William A. Wellman (“Wings” 1927), with an excellent screenplay by Ernest K. Gann, who adapted the story from his own 1953 novel of the same name.
The cast includes John Wayne, Claire Trevor, Loraine Day, Robert Stack, Jan Sterling, Phil Harris, Ann Dolan, Paul Fix, Regis Toomey, Carl Switzer, William Hopper, William Schallert, Sidney Blackmer, John Qualen, Karen Sharpe, and Julie Mitchum (sister of Robert Mitchum).
“The High and the Mighty” was popular with the movie-going public from producers John Wayne and Robert Fellows, Wayne-Fellows Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures. It was filmed in CinemaScope, and won one Academy Award for Best Musical Score (Dimitri Tiomkin).
