“The Hasty Heart” is a drama film set in a British mobile surgery unit towards the end of World War II in a jungle in Burma. A group of Allied soldiers, and one nurse, must deal with a disagreeable Scotsman who is dying from kidney problems.
The cast includes Richard Todd playing the Scottish soldier, Ronald Reagan is an American G. I., and Patricia Neal portrays the long-suffering nurse. Co-stars include Anthony Nicholls, Howard Marion-Crawford, Ralph Michael, John Sherman, Alfie Bass, Orlando Martins, and Robert Douglas as the narrator.
The actors were given outstanding material to work with. Ranald MacDougall authored the screenplay, adapted from the 1945 play of the same name by John Patrick. With good direction from Vincent Sherman (“Nora Prentiss” 1947), this joint Anglo-American production from Associated British Picture Corporation (ABPC) and Warner Bros. Pictures is very watchable entertainment.
