“The Harvey Girls” is a musical movie with the story centered around Judy Garland as a singing waitress. Director George Sidney (“Viva Las Vegas” 1964) and screenwriter Edmond Beloin put together a high quality film with great music, good production values, and outstanding acting and musical performances. The film is basically a Garland vehicle with a western flavor.
The film has eleven songs, all written by Harry Warren (music) and Johnny Mercer (lyrics), with the most famous being “On the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe” performed by Garland. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. In addition, Lennie Hayton was nominated for Best Musical Scoring, but did not win.
The stellar supporting cast includes John Hodiak, Ray Bolger, Angela Lansbury, Preston Foster, Marjorie Main, Chill Wills, Virginia O’Brien, Kenny Baker, Selena Royle, Jack Lambert, Dorothy Tuttle, and Cyd Charisse in her motion picture debut. The very watchable Technicolor movie “The Harvey Girls” was a success at the box office for producer Arthur Freed and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
