My Review

One of the best World War II action-adventure films to ever come out of Hollywood is “The Guns of Navarone.” This well-crafted story of an Allied commando unit’s efforts to destroy a German fortress that threatens the Allies’ ships in the Aegean Sea contains some outstanding photography and special effects, great acting by big name stars, focused direction by J. Lee Thompson, and a marvelous script by Carl Foreman. The film’s sole Oscar win (out of seven nominations) went to Best Special Effects.

The cast includes Gregory Peck, David Niven, Anthony Quinn, Anthony Quayle, James Darren, Irene Papas, Gia Scala, Stanley Baker, Richard Harris, James Robertson Justice, Allan Cuthbertson, Walter Gotell, and Bryan Forbes. “The Guns of Navarone” was a hit at the box office for producer Carl Foreman, Highroad Productions, and Columbia Pictures.
