My Review

“The Great Gatsby” is a glossy modern day version of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel depicting the lives of wealthy New Yorkers during the Roaring 20’s. Director Jack Clayton got good performances out of the cast, especially stars Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. Not known for their wide acting ranges, Redford and Farrow outdid themselves and delivered what is probably the best performances of their respective careers.

The supporting cast includes Bruce Dern, Sam Waterston, Karen Black, Scott Wilson, Lois Chiles, Edward Herrmann, Howard Da Silva, Vincent Schiavelli, Regina Baff, Kathryn Lee Scott, Beth Porter, Patsy Kensit, and movie veteran Roberts Blossom. The high quality production values earned the film two Oscar wins; Best Costume Design and Best Original Score (Nelson Riddle).

The watchable film had a great screenplay written by Francis Ford Coppola, and wonderful cinematography by Douglas Slocombe. These helped make “The Great Gatsby” a hit at the box office for producer David Merrick, Newdon Productions, and Paramount Pictures.
