“The Girl on the Train” is a thriller movie about a recently divorced woman who fantasizes about a seemingly perfect couple who live in a house that her train passes every day. On one trip, she observes a shocking incident there and becomes enmeshed in an unfolding mystery. Unfortunately, what seems to be a promising psychological thriller turns into a confusing melodrama because of uneven direction by Tate Taylor (“Get On Up” 2014) and even worse writing by script’s author Erin Cressida Wilson.
The film simply has too many contradictions with a difficult to follow storyline. And there is no character development to speak of. The cast includes Emily Blunt, Rebecca Ferguson, Luke Evans, Allison Janney, Lisa Kudrow, Haley Bennett, Justin Theroux, Edgar Ramirez, Laura Prepon, and Darren Goldstein. The unwatchable “The Girl on the Train” did make a profit in theaters for Marc Platt Productions, DreamWorks Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, and Universal Pictures.
