“The Ghost Writer” is an exciting political thriller where Ewan McGregor plays a writer who is helping a former British prime minister with his memoirs. As a result, McGregor gets involved in all sorts of international intrigue along the way, guided by the expert hand of producer-director-cowriter Roman Polanski (“Chinatown” 1974).
The formidable actors appearing with McGregor include Pierce Brosnan as the PM, Olivia Williams, Kim Kattrall, Timothy Hutton, Eli Wallach, Robert Pugh, Joe Bernthal, and Tim Preece. They had help from the excellent screenplay by Polanski and Robert Harris, who wrote the 2007 novel “The Ghost” from which the film was adapted.
The two hour-plus motion picture, independently produced in Europe, is highly watchable and goes by fast. “The Ghost Writer” is no mere apparition.
