My Review

“The Getaway” is an action-thriller movie about a criminal married couple who strike a deal with a mob boss to get the hubby out of prison, on the condition that they help the mobster on a big heist. When the job robbing a dog track goes horribly wrong, the couple escape with the cash. The action, adventure, thrills, chills, and spills proceed from there, tightly directed by Roger Donaldson (“Sleeping Dogs” 1977).

The screenplay was written by Walter Hill and Amy Holden Jones, adapted from the 1958 novel of the same name by Jim Thompson. It is a superior remake of the 1972 film of the same name starring Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw, with more believable plot details and a smoother retelling of the same story.

The stars of this project are Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger, who were married in real life, with great chemistry on the big screen. Too bad they weren’t in more movies together. (They did appear in “The Marrying Man” in 1991.) Co-stars include James Woods, Michael Madsen, Jennifer Tilly, Richard Farnsworth, Burton Gilliam, Philip Hoffman, David Morse, and James Stephens. The watchable escapist entertainment “The Getaway” was a modest hit at the box office for Largo Entertainment, JVC Entertainment, The Thurman/Foster Company, and Universal Pictures.
