My Review

Steve McQueen and Ali MacGraw star in an action-adventure movie called “The Getaway.” When a convict (McQueen) is refused parole, his wife (MacGraw) strikes a deal with an influential criminal (Ben Johnson) to pull strings to get him out in exchange for their help in one last bank robbery. The drama proceeds from there, not always a high-quality view or a satisfying story.

Director Sam Peckinpah (“Ride the High Country” 1962) laced the film with gratuitous sex and violence. He had a generous amounts of nudity and profanity throughout the movie. And screenwriter Walter Hill, who adapted the story from the 1958 novel of the same name by Jim Thompson, did not turn out a high quality product on his end, either. Co-stars include Sally Struthers, Al Lettieri, Slim Pickins, Dub Taylor, Bo Hopkins, Roy Jensen, Richard Bright, and Jack Dodson.

Nevertheless, “The Getaway” was a hit at the box office for First Artists, Solar Productions, David Foster Productions, Tatiana Films, and National General Pictures.
