My Review

Director Jason Reitman (“Tully” 2018) put together a film that takes a look at the rise and fall of Democratic presidential candidate Gary Hart in 1988. “The Front Runner” is a superficial work, not quite a documentary but not great storytelling either. Reitman was also one of the producers, and co-wrote the screenplay with Matt Bai and Jay Carson. It was adapted from Bai’s 2014 book “All The Truth is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid.”

Hugh Jackman’s performance was authentic enough to keep the picture from diving. The supporting cast includes Vera Farminga, J. K. Simmons, Alfred Molina, Kevin Pollack, Josh Brener, Bill Burr, and Sara Paxton as Donna Rice. “The Front Runner” from Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures was a huge bomb at the box office.
