In the colorful future of the 23rd Century, a cab drive unwittingly becomes the central figure in an effort to save Earth from destruction from the villainous Zorg and his forces of evil in the science fiction action movie “The Fifth Element.” French director-screenwriter Luc Besson (“The Big Blue” 1988) packed many outstanding elements into this two hour-plus film: A believable scifi story, numerous action-adventure scenes, well-timed comedy, great writing, exceptional performances, good musical elements, and subtle salutes to other films like “Star Wars” (1977).
The cast includes Bruce Willis as cab driver Korben Dallas, Gary Oldman as Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg, Ian Holm as Dr. Cornelius, Milla Jovovich as Leeloo, Luke Perry as Billy Masterson, Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod, Brion James as Gen. Munro, and Tommy “Tiny” Lister Jr. as President Lindberg. Other cast members are Lee Evans, Charlie Creed-Miles, John Neville, John Bluthal, Maiwenn Le Besco as the opera singer (Inva Mula as her voice), and Ivan Heng as Left Arm and Tricky as Right Arm.
The very exciting and watchable “The Fifth Element” was a big hit at the box office for Gaumont Buena Vista International. It was nominated for one Academy Award for Best Sound Editing. The Golden Raspberry Awards gave the film two nominations, one for Worst Supporting Actress (Jovovich) and Worst New Star (Tucker). The Stinkers Bad Movie Awards gave it four nominations for Worst Picture, Worst Director, Worst Supporting Actor (Tucker), and Worst Supporting Actress (Jovovich). It won three Cesar Awards (France) for Best Director, Best Cinematography (Thierry Arbogast), and Best Production Design.
