My Review

“The Fast and the Furious” is a crime drama B film that tells the story of a falsely imprisoned truck driver who breaks out of jail and takes a young woman hostage in her Juguar. The two fall in love and decide to enter a road race that goes from Los Angeles to the Mexican border, hoping to escape the long arm of the law. The stars of the show are John Ireland and Dorothy Malone, with support from Bruce Carlisle, Iris Adrian, Marshall Bradford, and Snub Pollard.

This film, which is long on car racing scenes and short on plot and character development, was the first project of legendary B movie filmmaker Roger Corman, who produced and co-wrote this film. It was the first movie to come out of American International Pictures, whose later projects include cult classics like “The Little Shop of Horrors” (1960) and “X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes” (1963).

“The Fast and the Furious” was remade in 2001 starring Vin Deisel and Paul Walker. This spawned a huge film franchise with block-buster sequels released in 2003, 2006, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2021, and 2023, plus a spin-off in 2019. The next sequel is scheduled for 2026, with three more after that!
