“The Eyes of Tammy Faye “ is a fascinating look at the controversial lives of televangelists Jim and Tammy Bakker. Andrew Garfield and Jessica Chastain delivered captivating performances as the couple whose multi-million dollar empire fell apart in spectacular fashion back in 1987.
Focused direction by Michael Showalter and a gem of a screenplay by Abe Sylvia helped keep this project on track, which was based on the 2000 documentary of the same name by Fenton Bailey and Bandy Barbato.
The supporting cast was outstanding, especially Vincent D’Onofrio as Jerry Falwell, Grabriel Olds as Pat Robertson, and Jay Huguley as Jimmy Swaggart. Others include Cherry Jones, Sam Jaeger, Fredric Lehne, Louis Cancelmi, and Mark Wystrach,
The watchable, entertaining, and even informative “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” was successful at the box office, music to the ears of Searchlight Pictures, a division of Walt Disney Studies.
