My Review

Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert move from the big city to the country in “The Egg and I.” This comedy motion picture tells the story of a wife who reluctantly follows her husband in his dream to become a chicken farmer. Lots of trials for the couple, and laughs for the viewers, ensue.

Producer-director Chester Erskine, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Fred F. Finklehoffe, expertly adapted the 1945 novel by Betty MacDonald to the big screen. It was very popular at the box office for Universal Pictures.

Prominent in the supporting cast are Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride as Ma and Pa Kettle. They created such a stir that Universal put them in their own movie series, which ran well into the 1950’s with nine feature films. Main was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar in this one.

Other co-stars in “The Egg and I” include Louise Allbritton, Richard Long, Billy House, Esther Dale, Ida Moore, Donald MacBride, Elisabeth Risdon, Fuzzy Knight, Victor Potel, and Samuel S. Hinds as the sheriff. “The Egg and I” also seems to be the inspiration for the CBS television show “Green Acres” (1965-1971), where Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor play another couple who leave big city life behind for country living.
