My Review

“The Day the Earth Stood Still” is a bad remake of the 1951 science fiction movie classic of the same name. The story still has an alien coming to warn the earth of problems, then about nuclear war and now director Scott Derrickson and screenwriter David Scarpa have changed the message to environmental disaster. The poorly written screenplay with a woke message makes this, not a disaster film, but a disaster of a film. The only good quality of this redux is the special effects.

The cast is headed by Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, the alien messenger in human form. Reeves has really not stretched his acting range much in the years since becoming a superstar in “Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure” in 1989. There actually may not be much difference between Theodore Logan and Klaatu. Other stars include Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith, John Cleese, Jon Hamm, Robert Knepper, Kyle Chandler, James Hong, John Rothman, Brandon Timothy Jackson, and Kathy Bates as the Secretary of Defense.

“The Day the Earth Stood Still” did have some moderate success at the box office for 3 Arts Entertainment, Dune Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox. It was nominated at the Razzie Awards for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, but lost to “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
