“The Day the Earth Stood Still” is a science fiction movie about an alien being who comes to Earth with a message for all of mankind, accompanied by a robot. Director Robert Wise (“The Sound of Music” 1965) and screenwriter Edmund H. North compiled a high-quality film that was one of the first “message” pictures.
The cast includes Michael Rennie as Klaatu, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe, Billy Gray, Sam Jaffe, Frances Bavier, Lock Martin, Guy Williams, Pat Aherne, Stuart Whitman, and Drew Pearson. This watchable black-and-white film “The Day the Earth Stood Still” did have modest popularity at the box office for 20th Century Fox. A remake with the same name came out in 2008 starring Keanu Reeves.
