Producer-director Christopher Nolan continues his unique interpretation of the Batman story in the highly dramatic and action-packed “The Dark Knight.” This sequel to Nolan’s 2005 “Batman Begins” has the Batman battling several villains in an effort to dismantle Gotham City’s crime organizations, the major foe turning out to be the Joker. Nolan and his brother Jonathan Nolan wrote the amazingly outstanding screenplay.
Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne, delivering a brilliant performance without which “The Dark Knight” would not have been possible. As mentioned, the major villain is the Joker; this was quite a chilling performance by Heath Ledger. He passed away in January, 2008, two months after he had completed filming and six months before general release. Ledger posthumously won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar. The other Academy Award win for the movie was for Best Sound Editing, out of eight nominations.
The cast also includes Gary Oldman as Police Commissioner James Gordon, Michael Caine as major domo Alfred Pennyworth, Aaron Eckhart as the District Attorney, Maggie Gyllenhaal as ADA Rachel Dawes, Morgan Freeman as Wayne Enterprises CEO Lucius Fox, and Nestor Carbonell as Mayor Anthony Garcia. Others in small parts or cameos are Anthony Michael Hall, Eric Roberts, Michael Jai White, Ritchie Coster, Chin Han, Tom “Tiny” Lister Jr., Nathan Gamble, Cillian Murphy, and Patrick Leahy.
“The Dark Knight” earned over one billion dollars at the box office, making it the highest grossing film of 2008, good news for Christopher Nolan, Syncopy, Legendary Pictures, and Warner Bros. Pictures. The third and final film of the trilogy would be “The Dark Knight Rises” in 2012.
