My Review

“The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” is a romantic comedy about a widower finding himself the victim of matchmaking efforts by his nine-year-old son. Glenn Ford and Ronny Howard do an excellent job in the lead roles, superbly directed by Vincent Minnelli (“Meet Me In St. Louis” 1944) from a well written screenplay by John Gay. It was adapted from the 1961 novel of the same name by Mark Toby.

At the time he was making this movie, Howard was starring as Opie Taylor in “The Andy Griffith Show” (1960-1968). The double-duty didn’t seem to adversely affect his performance. Glenn Ford was also at the top of his game. Potential girl friends for Ford’s character were played by Stella Stevens, Shirley Jones, Dina Merrill, and Lee Meriwether, with Jerry Van Dyke as his best friend and Roberta Sherwood as the wise-cracking housekeeper.

Ronny Howard and Shirley Jones were reunited from the 1962 hit “The Music Man,” and it looks like they were having fun here in the very watchable “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father.” It was a hit in theaters for producer Joe Pasternak, Euterpe Productions, Venice Productions, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film was adapted in a television series on ABC starring Bill Bixby, also called “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father” (1969-1972).
