My Review

One of Danny Kaye’s most memorable roles was “The Court Jester.” The story in this musical-comedy film has Kaye pose as the court jester to protect the true infant royal heir from the tyrannical and false king Roderick. Directors-screenwriters Melvin Frank and Norman Panama tailor-made the film for the talents of Kaye; this is a Danny Kaye vehicle.

The production values are top-rate including musical scoring by Vic Schoen, words and music by Sylvia Fine and Sammy Cahn, choreography by James Starbuck, costumes by Edith Head and Yvonne Wood, cinematography by Ray June, filmed in Technicolor.

Co-stars include Glynis Johns, Angela Lansbury, Basil Rathbone, Cecil Parker, John Carradine, Mildred Natwick, Michael Pate, Robert Middleton, and Alan Napier. The very watchable “The Court Jester” is a wildly entertaining movie from producers Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, Dena Enterprises, and Paramount Pictures.

Danny Kaye, Glynis Johns, and Mildred Natwick share a famous tongue-twister scene, one of the most famous in cinematic history. “The pellet with the poison’s in the vessel with the pestle; the chalice from the palace has the brew that is true!”
