Confusing story lines and a poorly written script characterize “The Counselor.” Though producer-director Ridley Scott (“Alien” 1979) makes an attempt at a glossy production with big name stars, picturesque cinematography, and good editing, the confusing screenplay by Cormac McCarthy make this 20th Century Fox and Columbia Pictures film very difficult to follow. In addition, elimination of two or three excessively violent scenes could have given this movie a PG13 rating instead of an R, and possibly greater success at the box office.
Scott did sign up some good actors, including Michael Fassbender in the title role, having previously worked together in “Prometheus” in 2012. The supporting cast includes Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem, Brad Pitt, Rosie Perez, Richard Cabral, Natalie Dormer, Edgar Ramirez, Ruben Blades, and John Leguizamo.
