My Review

“The Comedian” is a comedy-drama film about an aging comic attempting a comeback after serving a 30-day jail sentence for accosting an audience member. He becomes frustrated when the public does not fully accept him and many fans only want him to reenact lines and scenes from a hit television show he starred in back in the 1950’s. Director Taylor Hackford (“Dolores Claiborne” 1995) put together a poorly written movie about a very bitter insult comic with very few light or memorable moments. The mediocre story and screenplay was penned by Art Linson.

The star of the show is Robert De Niro, a talented actor at the right age for the role, but stuck with poor material. The equally talented co-stars efforts are also wasted on a trashy script. They include Leslie Mann, Danny DeVito, Edie Falco, Charles Grodin, Patti LuPone, Harvey Keitel, Lois Smith, and Cloris Leachman, the only actor who made a memorable appearance. There were numerous cameos by celebs like Billy Crystal, Gilbert Gottfried, Brett Butler, Bobby Rydell, Richard Belzer, Jim Norton, and others.

The mostly unappealing and unwatchable “The Comedian” was a flop at the box office for producers Taylor Hackford and Art Linson, Cinelou Films, Linson Entertainment, Anvil Films, The Fyzz Facility, Mad Riot Entertainment, and Sony Pictures Classics.
