My Review

“The Client” is a fast moving, well-paced, complex legal thriller from director Joel Schumacher (“St. Elmo’s Fire” 1985). The screenplay by Akiva Goldsman and Robert Getchell is a good adaptation of the 1993 novel by John Girsham.

At the center of the story is child actor Brad Renfro as Mark Sway, who, with his brother, witness the suicide of of a mob lawyer. Police authorities and mob figures both soon realize that the attorney may have divulged sensitive information to the two boys. The drama and action proceed from there.

The entire cast turns in outstanding performances, especially young Brad Renfro (in his motion picture debut), Susan Sarandon as the boys’ attorney, and Tommy Lee Jones as the grandstanding U. S. Attorney using the publicity as a stepping stone to higher office. Co-stars include Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, Will Patton, Ossie Davis, Anthony LaPaglia, J. T. Walsh, Bradley Whitford, Anthony Heald, Kim Coates, William H. Macy, John Diehl, Kimberly Scott, and Micole Mercurio as Mama Love.

The watchable two hour movie “The Client” was successful in theatrical release for Regency Enterprises, Alcor Films, and Warner Bros. Pictures. Susan Sarandon was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.
