My Review

“The Call of the Wild” is a sentimental tale of a dog’s journey from California to the Yukon Territory in the 1890’s Klondike Gold Rush. The 1903 Jack London novel was skillfully adapted by director Chris Sanders (“Lilo and Stitch” 2002) and screenwriter Michael Green (“Blade Runner 2049” 2017), with some inspiration from 20th Century Pictures 1935 film of the same name that starred Clark Gable and Loretta Young.

Sanders infused excellent production values into this picture, especially the photogenic scenery of the California mountians where it was filmed. Kudos to cinematographer Janusz Kaminski. The CGI was a bit overdone, giving Buck the dog excessive human facial expressions.

Harrison Ford is perfect in the lead role, and as the narrator. The supporting cast includes Omar Sy, Dan Stevens, Karen Gillan, Bradley Whitford, Jean Louisa Kelly, Cara Gee, Colin Woodell, and Michael Horse. The watchable movie “The Call of the Wild,” a film dog lovers will enjoy, was not a big hit at the box office for 20th Century Studios and The Walt Disney Company, but still an enjoyable view on dvd.
