My Review

Gary Busey delivers the biggest performance of his career as a legendary rock-and-roll star in “The Buddy Holly Story.” Busey personified Holly not only in appearance but in Holly’s singing voice as well. He recorded the soundtrack live, with the musical score managed, arranged, and composed by Joe Renzetti, who won the film’s sole Academy Award for Best Adaptation Score. Two other nominations were for Best Actor (Busey) and Best Sound.

Co-stars include Don Stroud, Charles Martin Smith, Conrad Janis, William Jordan, Maria Richwine, Dick O’Neill, Fred Travalena, Neva Patterson, Arch Johnson, and Paul Mooney as Sam Cooke and Gailard Sartain as The Big Bopper.

Director Steve Rash (“Can’t Buy Me Love” 1987) and screenwriter Robert Gittler did an outstanding job on the film, based on the 1975 biography by John Goldrosen called “Buddy Holly: His Life and Music.” The very watchable and entertaining “The Buddy Holly Story” was a hit at the box office for Columbia Pictures.
