My Review

The Best Picture of 1946 is…..”The Best Years of Our Lives.” Director William Wyler (“Mrs. Miniver” 1942) put together this excellent story of three World War II veterans returning home from war and the challenges they faced readjusting to civilian life and changes in society. Wyler did an excellent job of handling the large ensemble cast and bringing out numerous outstanding performances.

The cast was headed by Frederic March, Dana Andrews, and Harold Russell as the three vets. Co-stars include Myrna Loy, Teresa Wright, Virginia Mayo, Cathy O’Donnell, Hoagy Carmichael, Harold Russell, Ray Collins, Gladys George, Roman Bohnen, Ray Teal, Steve Cochran, Dorothy Adams, Erskine Sanford, and Michael Hall.

This very watchable black-and-white movie classic “The Best Years of Our Lives” was the highest grossing film of 1946 for producer Samuel Goldwyn and RKO Radio Pictures. It was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning nine: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (March), Best Supporting Actor (Russell), Academy Honorary Award (Russell), Best Screenplay (Robert E. Sherwood), Best Film Editing, Best Musical Scoring (Hugo Friedhofer), and the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award (Goldwyn).
