My Review

Leonardo DiCaprio plays a young man traveling in Thailand who stumbles upon an island paradise populated by European and American young people, and some local marijuana, farmers in “The Beach.” As his stay in the idyllic setting progresses, serious problems come to the surface that threaten his well-being. Trouble in paradise!

The actors deliver solid performances, such as DiCaprio in the lead role and Tilda Swinton, who becomes increasingly diabolical as the leader of the beach commune, as the film progresses. Others include Virginie Ledoyen, Guillaume Canet, Robert Carlyle, Paterson Joseph, Daniel Caltagirone, and Victoria Smurfit.

Director Danny Boyle (“Slumdog Millionaire” 2008) kept the picture organized to make the two hours go by rapidly. He was aided by John Hodge’s lucid screenplay, adapted by the 1996 novel of the same name by Alex Garland. “The Beach” from 20th Century Fox is indeed a watchable motion picture, successful in theatrical release.
