My Review

“The Apple Dumpling Gang” is a western-comedy film set during the California Gold Rush about a gambler tricked into adopting three orphans who, it is soon discovered, inherit a gold mine. The trio suddenly become very popular and the comedy progresses from there. Director Norman Tokar (“The Happiest Millionaire” 1967) put together this classic Disney comedy from a well written screenplay by Don Tait, adapted from the 1971 novel of the same name by Jack M. Bickham.

The stars of the show include Bill Bixby as the gambler, Clay O’Brien, Brad Savage, and Stacy Manning as the orphans, and Don Knotts and Tim Conway as the comic relief. The stellar supporting cast includes Susan Clark, David Wayne, Slim Pickins, Harry Morgan, John McGiver, John Knight, Bing Russell, Fran Ryan, Iris Adrian, Olan Soule, and Dick Winslow.

“The Apple Dumpling Gang” was a big hit at the box office for Walt Disney Productions, Buena Vista Distribution, and The Walt Disney Company. A sequel was released in 1979 called “The Apple Dumpling Gang Rides Again,” one of six film featuring Knotts and Conway. They include “Gus” (1976), “The Prize Fighter” (1979), “The Private Eyes” (1980), and “Cannonball Run 2” (1984).
