My Review

“The Andromeda Strain” is a science fiction movie about a team of scientists sent by the government to investigate a potentially deadly organism that comes to earth from outer space, aboard a U. S. research satellite that crashes in rural Arizona. Director Robert Wise (“The Sound of Music” 1965) and screenwriter Nelson Gidding kept the storyline close to the 1969 novel of the same name by Michael Crichton.

The result is a tightly directed motion picture with little excess. The action holds the audience’s attention throughout the two-hour & ten minute running time. The excellent special effects were handled by Douglas Trumbull, who did the same for “2001: A Space Odessey” (1968) and other sci-fi classics. The use of the split screen is especially effective in certain scenes.

The cast includes Arthur Hill, David Wayne, Kate Reid, and James Olson portraying the scientists. Co-stars include Paula Kelly, George Mitchell, Ramon Bieri, Peter Hobbs, Kermit Murdock, Richard O’Brien, Eric Christmas, and Ken Swofford as Toby the technician. Also starring is Frances Reid as David Wayne’s character’s wife. She is famous for playing matriarch Alice Horton on the daytime drama “Days of Our LIves” (1965-2007). Wayne and Reid were also semi-regulars on the nighttime drama “Dallas.”

The watchable “The Andromeda Strain” was very successful in theatrical release for producer Robert Wise and Universal Pictures.
