My Review

“The Aftermath” is an excellent film exploring the relationship between Britain and Germany after World War II. It tells the story of an English colonel working in the reconstruction effort in Germany, who is joined by his wife. Tensions arise when it is revealed that the wife of the German man they are staying with was killed by Allied bombing, and the son of the Anglo couple was killed in the Blitz of London.

The complicated and multi-layered narrative was expertly handled by director James Kent (“Testament of Youth” 2014) and screenwriters Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse, adapting the story from the 2013 novel of the same name by Rhidian Brook. The cast includes Keira Knightley and Jason Clarke as the English couple, Alexander Skarsgard and Flora Thiemann as the German man and his daughter, with Martin Compston, Kate Phillips, Jannik Schumann, Fiona O’Shea, Alexander Scheer, and Pip Torrens as General Brook.

“The Aftermath” is an outstanding and watchable picture from producer Ridley Scott (“Alien” 1079) and his Scott Free Productions, BBC Films, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
