“The Adam Project” is a science fiction adventure movie starring Ryan Reynolds as a fighter pilot in the year 2050 who accidentally flies through time back to 2022, where he meets his 12-year-old self. Director Shawn Levy, who worked with Reynolds last year on “Free Guy,” works with material we have seen before in film, albeit in a passable form here.
Reynolds is the star of the show, lending his wholesome boy-next-door charm to this role, improving on what might have been a very boring film. Co-stars include Walker Scobell as the young Adam, Mark Ruffalo and Jennifer Garner as his parents, as well as Catherine Keener, Zoe Saldana, and Alex Mallari Jr.
The so-so screenplay was penned by Jonathan Tropper, T. S. Nowlin, Jennifer Flackett, and Mark Levin. The narrowly adequate job on “The Adam Project” makes for a barely watchable film from Netflix.
