My Review

Cary Grant and Doris Day star in the romantic comedy “That Touch of Mink.” Day plays an employee at the company owned by Grant, they become romantically involved, and soon discover they have different goals in life. The comedy, and some drama, proceeds from there. Director Delbert Mann (“Marty” 1955) ensured good production values, dealing with the fact that the charms and acting abilities of two aging stars are not as great as they once were. Things hold up pretty good, all things considered. The solid screenplay by Stanley Shapiro and Nate Monaster helps out.

Co-stars include Gig Young, Audrey Meadows, John Astin, Alan Hewitt, Dick Sargent, Joey Faye, Laurie Mitchell, John Fielder, and Richard Deacon. Roger Maris, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees appear as themselves when Doris Day and Cary Grant go on a date at Yankee Stadium. “That Touch of Mink” was a big hit at the box office for producer Martin Melcher (Day’s husband), Granley Company, Arwin Productions, Nob Hill Productions, and Universal Pictures. It was fourth highest grossing motion picture of 1962, and was nominated for three Academy Awards: Screenplay, Art Direction, and Sound.
