“Tears of the Sun” is an action film telling the story of a U. S. Navy SEAL team sent on a rescue mission in a civil war in Nigeria. They are to extract an American doctor from her jungle hospital before a vicious group of rebels reach her hospital when complication arise. Thrills, chills, and spills proceed from there. Director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day” 2001) expertly put together this thriller with loads of action from a well written screenplay by Alex Lasker and Patrick Cirillo.
Bruce Willis is the star of the show as the head of the Navy SEAL team. He delivers the goods in the film, as this is definitely his type of role. The movie is a Bruce Willis vehicle to a large extent. His talented co-stars include Monica Bellucci, the Italian actress who plays the doctor, and Tom Skerritt definitely in his element as Willis’ commanding officer. The supporting cast includes Cole Hauser, Fionnula Flanagan, Pierrino Mascarino, Eamonn Walker, Johnny Messner, Nick Chinlund, Peter Mensah, Okosua Busia, Sammi Rotibi, and Benjamin Ochieng.
The watchable “Tears of the Sun” was a modest success in theatrical release for Columbia Pictures, Revolution Studios, Cheyenne Enterprises, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
