My Review

Debbie Reynolds stars in one of her most famous roles in “Tammy and the Bachelor.” The theme song performed by Reynolds was a big hit on the music charts in 1957. The song’s composers, Jay Livingston and Ray Evans, received the movie’s sole Academy Award nomination for Best Song. (The Ames Brothers’ version covered the film’s credits.)

The story tells of country girl Tammy and her grandfather rescuing a pilot whose small airplane crashes near their home. Tammy nurses him back to health and falls in love with him. Numerous complications arise, skillfully crafted by director Joseph Pevney (“Congo Crossing” 1956). Pevney, screenwriter Oscar Brodney, and producer Ross Hunter were the right combination to put together this light romantic comedy, a big hit for Universal Pictures. It was adapted from the 1948 novel “Tammy Out of Time” by Cid Ricketts Sumner.

The co-stars with Debbie Reynold includes Leslie Nielsen as the pilot, Walter Brennan as her grandfather, Mala Powers, Mildred Natwick, Fay Wray, Philip Ober, Sidney Blackmer, Craig Hill, April Kent (daughter of actress June Havoc), and Louise Beavers as Osia the cook.

“Tammy and the Bachelor” was the first of four Tammy pictures, the only one featuring Reynolds. “Tammy Tell Me True” (1961) and “Tammy and the Doctor” (1963) starred Sandra Dee, and “Tammy and the Millionaire” (1967) with Debbie Watson.
