My Review

“Support Your Local Sheriff” is a western comedy movie about a small town in Colorado experiencing a gold rush and a subsequent breakdown in law and order. An easy-going gunfighter, on his way to Australia, comes to town and reluctantly agrees to take the job as sheriff. His metal is tested when he encounters some local troublemakers, and the comedy and some drama proceed from there.

Director Burt Kennedy (“The War Wagon” 1967) and screenwriter William Bowers (also producer) keep the light comedic tone to the picture and maintain good production values. The familiar faces in the talented supporting cast includes Jack Elam, Joan Hackett, Walter Brennan, Harry Morgan, Bruce Dern, Henry Jones, Kathleen Freeman, Willis Bouchey, Walter Burke, Chubby Johnson, Gene Evans, Dick Peabody, and Dick Haynes as the bartender.

The watchable and entertaining “Support Your Local Sheriff” was successful at the box office for producer William Bowers, Cherokee Productions, and United Artists. In 1971, director Burt Kennedy and United Artists released a sequel called “Support Your Local Gunfighter” starring Garner, Elam, Morgan, and others.
