My Review

“Streets of New York” is a drama film about a teenager in New York City in the 1930’s trying to make an honest living in the midst of criminal activities. He operates a newsstand while studying to be an attorney and caring for a crippled boy whose mother has died. He must also deal with his brother, who is a big-time criminal, and a neighborhood gang causing him and his newsstand trouble.

Jackie Cooper does an excellent job in the film’s title role; he is actually 17-years-old when making this movie, the same age as his character, and carries the movie like a true professional. Cooper had been in movies for about ten years at this point. His motion picture career would actually go on for decades, making his final film in 1987, “Surrender” from Warner Bros. Pictures, where he played Sally Fields’ father.

The talented supporting cast includes Martin Spellman, Marjorie Reynolds, Dick Purcell, George Cleveland, George Irving, Robert Emmett O’Connor, Sidney Miller, David Durand, and Buddy Pepper. Director William Nigh (“Gangster’s Boy” 1938) and screenwriter Robert Hardy Daniels put together this excellent picture “Streets of New York” for Monogram Pictures. The movie was also known as “The Abe Lincoln of Ninth Avenue” or “The Abraham Lincoln of the 4th Avenue.”
