My Review

“Stars and Stripes Forever” is a rousing biographical movie based on the life of composer and band leader John Philip Sousa (1854-1932), author of numerous military marches and patriotic musical numbers.

Director Henry Koster (“The Robe” 1953) and screenwriter Lamar Trotti (“Cheaper by the Dozen” 1950) did an excellent job of adapting the Sousa autobiography “Marching Along,” published in 1928. Music for the film was handled by Leo Arnaud and Alfred Newman.

Clifton Webb headed the talented cast and gave an excellent performance as the legendary Sousa. Others include Debra Paget, Robert Wagner, Ruth Hussey, Roy Roberts, Maude Prickett, Finley Currie, Thomas Brown Henry, Lester Matthews, and Richard Garrick. This very watchable biopic of John Philip Sousa, “Stars and Stripes Forever,” filmed in Technicolor from 20th Century Fox, is still an excellent view on television in the modern era of the 21st century.
