My Review

The long anticipated “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” is out, a satisfying conclusion of nine motion pictures that began with the original “Star Wars” in 1977. Producer-director-screenwriter J. J. Abrams filled the two hour and twenty-two minute picture with continuous action sequences, special effects, unexpected plot twists, familiar actors (old and new), and jaw-dropping revelations that we have come to expect from the extremely popular film franchise, created by George Lucas in the 1970’s and now owned by The Walt Disney Company.

Prominent among the cast were the three originals: Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, and Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa. The latter’s appearance was actually unused footage from “The Force Awakens,” as Fisher passed away on December 27, 2016.

Others include Daisy Ridley as Rey, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, John Boyaga as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe, Domhall Gleeson as Hux, Lupita Nyongo as Maz, Keri Russell as Zorii Bliss, Billie Lourd (Fisher’s daughter) as Lt. Connix, Billie Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, Ian McDiarmid as Emperor Palpatine, and Anthony Daniels as C-3PO. Daniels as the wildly popular droid was the only actor to appear in all nine films.

“The Rise of Skywalker” earned $375 million in the first weekend of global release for LucasFilm and Walt Disney Pictures. This was the seventh billion dollar movie for The Walt Disney Company in 2019, including “Captain Marvel,” “Avengers: End Game,” “Aladdin,” “Toy Story 4,” The Lion King,” and “Frozen II.”

J. J. Abrams, co-producer Kathy Kennedy, and co-writer Chris Terrio have created a very watchable motion picture in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” providing closure to the Skywalker saga of the nine “Star Wars” films, and to the trilogy that premiered in 2015 with “The Force Awakens” and continued in 2017 with “The Last Jedi.”
