My Review
The new “Star Wars” film is out and the verdict is in: Virtually everyone loves it! “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has something old (Han, Leia, Luke), something new (Rey, Finn, Ren, Poe), something borrowed (the gang wandering around a new Death Star, called the Starkiller Base), and something blue (Leia’s mood).
LucasFilm President Kathy Kennedy, director J. J. Abrams, and screenwriters Lawrence Kasdan, Michael Arndt, and J. J. Abrams have pulled off a modern day miracle in creating the long-awaited seventh installment of the beloved “Star Wars” franchise that is loaded with great action sequences, fantastic actors, and an energetic, humorous, and dramatic story filmed in appropriately exotic backdrops and locales.
We all love seeing Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, and Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker once again after a thirty-two year absence. It’s like reconnecting with old friends from high school or college. Ditto for Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, and Kenny Baker, a “consultant” for R2-D2?
Kennedy and Abrams really had their genius caps on when they cast Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, the son of Han & Leia. Their talent, charisma, and just general big screen presence make them perfect fits into the “Star Wars” universe. The same thing goes for Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux, Lupita Nyongo as Maz Kanata, Andy Serkis (in motion capture) as Supreme Leader Snoke, and Dave Chapman and Brian Herring who were puppeteers for the loveable BB-8. Also worth mentioning are Max von Sydow as Lor San Tekka, Billie Lourd (daughter of Carrie Fisher) as Lt. Connix of the Resistance, and Daniel Craig in an unrecognizable cameo as a stormtrooper.
The Board of Directors and shareholders of The Walt Disney Company should be delighted that “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” set new all-time box office records in Hollywood history: $529 million in the first weekend (globally) and one billion dollars income in twelve days. (The film ultimately made over two billion dollars.) That would make anyone in any galaxy, near or far, far away, very happy.
