My Review

George Lucas hit a home run with his first sequel to the mega-hit “Star Wars” of 1977. “The Empire Strikes Back” was a big hit with critics and fans alike, becoming the highest grossing movie of 1980. The story has Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine pursing Luke Skywalker and his Rebel Alliance friends across the galaxy. When they capture Leia, Han, and the others, Luke must decide between completing his Jedi training or to confront Vader and rescue his friends.

The cast includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Harrison Ford as Han Solo, Carrie Fisher as Leia Organa, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Kenny Baker as R2-D2, Peter Mayhew as Chewbacca, David Prowse/James Earl Jones (voice) as Darth Vader, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, Alec Guinness as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Denis Lawson as Wedge Antilles, John Ratzenberger as Major Derlin, and Frank Oz performing the puppet Yoda. The Emperor was played by Elaine Baker and voiced by Clive Revill. Ian McDiarmid, who played Palapine in “Return of the Jedi” and in the prequel trilogy, replaced both in the 2004 DVD.

“Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back” won two Oscars: Special Achievement Academy Award for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound. There were two other nominations: Best Art Direction and Best Original Score (John Williams). Williams won two Grammy Awards: Best Instrumental Composition and Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media. Kudos to director Irvin Kershner, screenwriters Leigh Bracken and Lawrence Kasdan, producer Gary Kurtz, executive producer George Lucas, LucasFilm Ltd., and 20th Century Fox for a job well done!
