After a big misfire in “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” (1979), and its poor reception from critics and the general public, Paramount Pictures struck gold with the second picture “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”
The brass at Paramount removed creator Gene Roddenberry from executive producer duties and replaced him with Harve Bennett. (Roddenberry was kicked upstairs as a “consultant.”) Bennett then tapped Ricardo Montalban to reprise his role of Khan Noonian Singh from a 1967 “Star Trek” television episode called “Space Seed” to be the heavy of the 1982 film. He would be out for revenge on Captain James T. Kirk (now Admiral) for the death of his wife. With this course correction, the “Star Trek” franchise was saved and on its way into orbit with many more films and television series. “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan” was a huge blockbuster for Paramount Pictures.
The original cast returned: William Shatner as Jim Kirk, Leonard Nimoy as Spock, DeForest Kelley as Dr. McCoy, James Doohan as Scotty, Nichelle Nichols as Uhura, George Takai as Sulu, Walter Keonig as Chekov, joined by Ricardo Montalban as Khan, Bibi Besch as Dr. Carol Marcus, Merritt Butrick as David Marcus, Paul Winfield as captain of the Reliant, Judson Scott as Khan’s henchman, and Kirstie Alley in her movie debut as Saavik, a Vulcan protege of Spock.
