My Review

J. J. Abrams has produced another high-quality “Star Trek” product in “Star Trek Beyond.” The screenplay by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung tells of the Enterprise being ambushed and the subsequent crash landing on an inhospitable planet, where the crew struggles to survive. This story is reminiscent of the plots of the original television series in the 1960’s. “Beyond” is in fact released on the fiftieth anniversary of the “Star Trek” debut in 1966 on NBC.

Abrams hired Justin Lin (“The Fast and Furious” movies 3-6) to direct, with fantastic results. The action keeps on coming, balanced with character development and the relationships between the Enterprise principals.

Speaking of which, the performances were top-rate, and not only reflect good acting but great casting: Chris Pine as Jim Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Leonard McCoy, Zoe Saldana as Nyota Uhura, Simon Pegg as Montgomery Scott, John Cho as Hikaru Sulu, and Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. Others include Idris Elba, who was convincing and almost unrecognizable as the antagonist Krall, and Sofia Boutella, Joe Taslim, Lydia Wilson, Deep Roy, Melissa Roxburgh.

Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek Beyond,” number thirteen of the series, was dedicated to the late Leonard Nimoy and the late Anton Yelchin. Both will be missed in the Star Trek universe and in real life as well.
