Scottish director Jon S. Baird (“Cass” 2008) gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the friendship of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy in “Stan and Ollie.” The story is set in a 1953 music hall tour of Britain and Ireland, which was their final collaboration. The well written screenplay by Jeff Pope seems to have insight into the private lives of the comedy duo, an amicable picture that fans of Laurel & Hardy can appreciate.
Steve Coogan as Stanley Laurel and John C. Reilly as Oliver Hardy certainly do capture the entertainers’ personas, down to physical characteristics that movie fans recall. The supporting cast includes Shirley Henderson as Mrs. Hardy and Nina Arianda as Mrs. Laurel, as well as Rufus Jones, Susy Kane, and Danny Huston as movie pioneer Hal Roach.
“Stan and Ollie” was produced by BBC Films and released by Sony Pictures Classics.
