“Splendor in the Grass” is a romantic drama centering around the ups and downs of a relationship between two teenagers, capably played by Natalie Wood and Warren Beatty. Tight direction by Elia Kazan (“East of Eden” 1955) and a lucid screenplay by William Inge made this something of an enjoyable melodrama set in Kansas in 1928.
The performances by cast are worth watching, especially Natalie Wood in her first adult film role. This was also the big screen debut of Warren Beatty, Sandy Dennis, Phyliss Diller, and Gary Lockwood. Hollywood veteran Pat Hingle stood out in his role as Beatty’s flamboyant father.
“Splendor in the Grass” was a success at the box office for producer Elia Kazan, Newtown Productions, NBI Company, and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film won one Academy Award for Best Screenplay, and was nominated for Best Actress for the photogenic Natalie Wood.
