My Review

“Spies Like Us” is a good vehicle for the wacky comedy of Chevy Chase and Dan Aykroyd. They star in this humorous story of two U. S. government intelligence flunkies sent on a mission to Pakistan to serve as decoys to take attention away from more experienced operatives.

The screenplay by Lowell Ganz, Babaloo Mandel, and Aykroyd is good material for the pair, well directed by John Landis (“Twilight Zone: The Movie” 1983), who kept the picture on track, upbeat, and professional. Elmer Bernstein composed the musical score, and Paul McCartney wrote and performed the title song.

Bob Hope even made a cameo appearance in this salute to his “Road to…” movie series. Co-stars include Steve Forrest, Donna Dixon, Bruce Davison, Bernie Casey, William Prince, Frank Oz, Terry Gilliam, Charles McKeown, James Daughton, Ray Harryhausen, Vanessa Angel, and Tom Hatten, host of “Family Film Festival” on KTLA Channel 5 from the 1960’s to the 1980’s.

With the musical score composed by Elmer Bernstein, “Spies Like Us” was a hit at the box office for AAR Films and Warner Bros. Pictures.
