My Review

The unlikely story of four elderly and retired U. S. Air Force pilots assigned by NASA to go into outer space to repair a damage Soviet satellite about to crash to Earth is the plot behind “Space Cowboys.” The only factor that saves this ridiculous project from producer-director Clint Eastwood (“Play Misty for Me” 1971) is the chemistry among the stars: Eastwood, James Garner, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones.

The screenplay by Ken Kaufman and Howard Klausner is at least passable. The film is also helped by an overqualified supporting cast: William Devane, James Cromell, Marcia Gay Harden, Loren Dean, Barbara Babcock, Courtney B. Vance, Blair Brown, Jon Hamm, Toby Stephens, Eli Craig, John Asher, Matt McColm, and Jay Leno as himself.

The moderately successful “Space Cowboys” from Malpaso Productions, Village Roadshow Pictures, Clipsal Films, Mad Chance Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures does not exactly send us into orbit. It was nominated for an Oscar for Best Sound Editing.
