My Review

The popular “Thin Man” movie series ended in 1947 with “Song of the Thin Man.” William Powell and Myrna Loy play crime-solving husband-and-wife team Nick and Nora Charles featuring their usual witty bantering.

The screenplay by Nat Perrin, Steve Fisher, Harry Crane, James O’Hanlon, and Dashiell Hammett lost some of the luster of previous films. However, the film does contain the usual engrossing murder mystery, this time set in the world of nightclub musicians, hence the title. Good job by director Edward Buzzell (“Honolulu” 1939).

Familiar names appear in the supporting cast such as Keenan Wynn, Jayne Meadows, and child actor Dean Stockwell, who played the Charles’ son, would go on to enjoy lengthy show business careers. Producer Nat Perrin also hired Leon Ames, Gloria Grahame, Marie Windsor, Patricia Morrison, and Phillip Reed to work on the watchable “Song of the Thin Man,” popular at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

The MGM films featuring the adventures of Nick and Nora Charles are: “The Thin Man” (1934), “After the Thin Man” (1936), “Another Thin Man” (1939), “Shadow of the Thin Man” (1941), “The Thin Man Goes Home” (1945), and “Song of the Thin Man” (1947).
