My Review

“Son of God” tells the story of the life of Jesus, from his birth to death on the cross and his resurrection. Director Christopher Spencer used scenes from last year’s mini-series “The Bible,” as well as unused segments from this History Channel broadcast.

Producers Mark Burnett and Roma Downey and director Spencer assembled a great cast for this Biblical epic. Actor Diogo Morgado of Portugal was a good fit in the title role. Others include Darwin Shaw as Peter, Greg Hicks as Pontius Pilate, Sebastian Knapp as John, Said Bey as Matthew, Fraser Ayres as Barabbas, Matthew Gravelle as Thomas, Amber Rose Revah as Mary Magdalene, and Roma Downey as Mary the mother of Jesus.

The well-written screenplay by Richard Bedser, Colin Swash, Nic Young, and Spencer is faithful to the Biblical text and seems as fresh as today’s news. The fantastic cinematography by Rob Goldie takes full advantage of the location shots in Morocco. Also worth mentioning is the top-rate musical score by Hans Zimmer.

Mark Burnett has been a prolific producer of television programs, having created and produced reality shows like “The Apprentice,” “Survivor,” “The Voice,” and “Shark Tank.” He was formerly President of MGM Worldwide Television Group, and has personally won twelve Emmy Awards. His wife Roma Downey has produced television shows herself, and is an accomplished actress, her most famous role was playing Monica the angel on CBS’s “Touched by an Angel” (1994-2003).

“Son of God” stands alone as a definitive motion picture depiction of the life of Jesus, or as part of the larger series of “The Bible” produced by the Burnett’s. “Son of God” was a huge hit at the box office for Lightworkers Media and 20th Century Fox.
