My Review

“Snow White and the Huntsman” is a fresh and new retelling of the old Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Snow White,” first published in 1812. Unlike the old sanitized Walt Disney version, this new offering shows life in medieval Europe in gritty reality.

Director Rupert Sanders kept the action and drama on an even keel throughout the movie; good job for his feature film debut. He was helped by the sterling screenplay by Evan Daugherty, John Lee Hancock, and Hossein Amini.

The actors are very well cast in “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Kristen Stewart projects a measured vulnerability as Snow White. Chris Hemsworth, widely recognized as Thor to the movie-going public, did well in this demotion to mere mortal Eric the Huntsman. Charlize Theron does a stupendous job as the evil Queen Ravenna, who must periodically drain the life out of young women to maintain her own youth and beauty.

The Dwarves are portrayed by actors of average height who had their faces digitally transferred onto small bodies. (A protest was issued by the Little People of America.) Snow White’s dwarves were portrayed by Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Eddie Marsan, Johnny Harris, Brian Gleeson, and Bob Hoskins in his final film role in a career that started in 1972. Other cast members include Sam Claflin, Vincent Regan, Sam Spruell, Lily Cole, Noah Huntley, Liberty Ross, Rachel Sterling, Greg Hicks, Peter Ferdinando, Anastasia Hill, Matt Berry, and Chris Obi as the Man in the Mirror.

The watchable “Snow White and the Huntsman” was successful at the box office for Universal Pictures, and also earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Visual Effects.
