“Snow White” is a musical fantasy film that is a live action remake and reimagining of Walt Disney’s classic 1937 animated film “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” which was itself was based on the 1812 Brothers Grimm “Snow White” fairy tale. Director Marc Webb (“The Amazing Spider-Man” 2012) and screenwriter Erin Cressida Wilson put together this ambitious project that on the surface is a faithful retelling of the original, but was a huge box office flop with the public and also heavily panned by critics.
The problems cited include poor choices for the title role and various supporting characters, “woke” elements in the script, modernization of the story, badly produced musical numbers, and a generally cold feeling throughout the film. Depiction of the seven dwarfs by way of CGI (computer generated imagery) was also heavily criticized. The CGI characters did not blend well with the human cast. Another factor was the media firestorm surrounding star Rachel Zegler’s anti-Israel statements juxtaposed with co-star Gal Gadot’s strong support of Israel. Gadot is actually Israeli, and a descendant of Jewish immigrants from Europe.
The cast is headed by Rachel Zegler as Snow White and Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen, with mostly unknowns and many mediocre talents in supporting roles such as Hadley Fraser and Lorena Andrea as Snow White’s parents, Andrew Burnap, Ansu Kabia, Patrick Page, Jeremy Swift, among others. The unwatchable “Snow White” also suffered from a huge production budget and massive marketing expenses. Therefore, it is no surprise that “Snow White” was a huge box office bomb for producer Marc Platt, Walt Disney Pictures, Marc Platt Productions, Walt Disney Studios and Motion Pictures, and The Walt Disney Company.
