My Review

Quality still rules after a half century of James Bond in “Skyfall.” The story has Daniel Craig’s Bond shot and presumed dead and missing for some time. He is actually in a self-imposed retirement at some exotic tropical location. Bond decides to return home when he learns of attacks on M16 headquarters. Director Sam Mendes (“American Beauty” 1999) made this Bond movie one of the best with plenty of thrills, chills, and spills to keep viewers enthralled for 143 minutes.

Daniel Craig is continuing his 007 tenure with class and energy in movie number three; he will keep going for two more films! The villain of “Skyfall” is portrayed by Javier Bardem, playing up his creepy looks and menacing persona. Berenice Marlohe from France plays the latest Bond girl. Others include Helen McCrory, Rory Kinnear, Ola Rapace, and Albert Finney as the gatekeeper of the Skyfall estate, his final film role in a career that begin in 1960. Judi Dench has made her seventh and final appearance as M, the head of M16 and Bond’s boss, replaced at the end of the picture by Ralph Fiennes. Naomie Harris is the new Eve Moneypenny, and Ben Whishaw takes over as Q, the M16 Quartermaster.

The top-rate screenplay was penned by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade, and John Logan. The film received five Oscar nominations, winning two for Best Sound Editing and Best Original Song, written by Adele and Paul Epworth, performed by Adele. Worth mentioning was the top-rate cinematography by Roger Deakins and the musical score by Thomas Newman.

This film has numerous salutes to Sean Connery, the original 007, on the fiftieth anniversary of the release of “Dr. No” in October, 1962. This is the 23rd Bond film from Eon Production, with two others from different producers: “Casino Royale” (1967) and “Never Say Never Again” (1983). The very watchable “Skyfall” was a big hit at the box office for producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Eon Productions, Columbia Pictures, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
